Real Carrot Sticks

That's right! Real carrot sticks! Yes, I am devoting an entire blog post to raw carrots. Here I go.

When's the last time you bit into a real carrot stick? I mean one that was peeled and cut. I don't know who invented those pre-cut awkward little stubby carrots, but they certainly weren't around when I was a kid. I just can't bring myself to buy them. They are easy, convenient, and affordable, but they just don't taste the same to me!

I prefer the kind of carrot sticks my great-grandma used to serve. Eating them makes me happy. I don't mind peeling and cutting them. In fact, peeling carrots is my kid's favorite job in the kitchen, so it's good for everyone! And, these are the perfect after school snack. So call me a food snob, but there ya go, that's how I feel about carrots!

So what about you? Do you peel and cut your own carrots too? Or do you think I'm nuts? (wait...don't answer that! haha)

  1. This made me laugh! :) I buy regular carrots that I have to peel. Baby carrots are not the same. If you cook them in soup or something else, they don't cook near as fast, and the regular carrots taste way better anyway. And I agree, it doesn't take that much to peel and cut one up!

  3. We don't have ready-cut carrots in our country, so it's just old-fashioned around here ;)

  4. I don't even bother peeling them haha. I just scrub them well and then cut em up. Way yummier than those precut ones!

  5. I always do real carrot sticks too! My grandma sent me a scary email about the baby ones so I've been sticking to the old school ones ever since. She might have been crazy but I like it better anyway.

But I am also with you! Love the "real" ones too - especially when they are from the garden...yum!

  8. I think I went through a stage about 10 years ago where I was buying big bags of pre-cut carrots because I was busy (lazy) and worked a lot. We had some NASTY ones - mold and slimy! And they are ALL tasteless regardless of the slime or not. So no more, fresh carrots peeled by me only!
I think I went through a pre-cut broccoli stage too...

  10. While the baby carrots are real carrots (odd shaped ones that can't be sold are cut to the little size) I don't like the stuff added to them to help keep them fresh,... so we ONLY buy whole carrots and cut our own. It does amaze me when I take them somewhere how many comments I get on how good they are AND asking when I had the time... but it only takes a few extra mins.

  11. i just started eating paleo. I am now buying organics and I don't even think they make organic baby carrots. I don't even think they are "baby Carrots" I think they are big carrots cut and peeled and preserved in a little bag. I find my kids like the taste of regular carrots better any how. Great post!

  12. We actually eat real carrot sticks 9 times out of 10 around here. For a while be bought the 'baby carrots' but then I realized that they just don't taste as good as the real thing. When I go to the store I buy carrots and celery and then immediately peel and cut them so that they are in a container ready to go.

  16. YAY I'm not the only crazy person! I love "homemade" carrot sticks! People always ask me to bring the relish tray cause I'm busy and they think they are doing me a favor, but I never buy the pre-cut anything so it's a lot of work but way beautiful and worth every second!

  17. Don't pre-cut baby carrots have a bleach smell. That just doesn't seem right!

  18. Agree, It takes no time at all. I also don't shave my carrots, just scrub them, so many nutrients in the skin it's a shame to throw them away - they do taste better - You are definitely not nuts!
